Celebrating the life of

Nancy Armistead Nicholson Hughes

October 07, 1929 - October 06, 2009

Nancy Armistead Nicholson Hughes

Nancy Armistead Nicholson Hughes died Tuesday afternoon, October 6, 2009, the day before her 80th birthday. She was surrounded by family and friends and was in good health up to the day of her death. All of us who knew her will miss the joy she brought to everything she did, her indomitable good cheer, her patience, wisdom and humor.

She was married to William Arthur Hughes in December of 1950 and was still with him the day she passed away, happy in her marriage, content with the home they made together. Her enduring partnership with her husband was the core of the family and was reflected in the love she expressed so avidly for her children.

Nancy earned a Registered Nursing Degree from the University of Virginia. She returned to school in her middle years to acquire her BSN at Armstrong University and worked in the nursing field for more than thirty years, including a long career at Memorial Hospital where she rose to the position of Assistant Director of Nursing.

After retiring she turned her attention to painting and drawing, working happily to capture her vision of life on Isle of Hope and promoting the arts in every way she could. Her days were filled with the things she loved to do, especially spending time with her three beloved grandsons. She was also an avid reader, an engaging conversationalist, an empathetic and compassionate friend and neighbor, and the best wife, Mom, and grandmother anyone could ever have.

Nancy was an active member of the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church for more than forty years where she attended the Seekers Sunday school class. She was a former chairperson for the church's annual "Day on the Island" bazaar and served in many other roles.

Nancy Hughes is survived by her husband of 59 years, Bill Hughes, a daughter, Hope Harris, and her husband Rick, two sons, Jennings Lee, and his wife Amy, and William Armistead, as well as by three grandsons, Jennings, Jr., William and Harrison. She also leaves behind two sisters, Virginia Garrett and Eline Hancock, and a brother, James Nicholson.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 9, 2009 at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to the Green House Project in care of Isle of Hope United Methodist Church, 412 Parkersburg Road, Savannah, GA 31406.

I got to know Nancy through her art sales with the Isle of Hope Artisan's League. Earlier this year we spent a morning together as docents for a Landings Art Association show and had the best chat - her love of UVA where my daughter Molly is a 3rd year, her nursing career, her love of art, and mostly, her love of her husband. I will always remember that she said she laughed with him every day. What a joyful lovely woman. I hope your memories of her will give you comfort.
